FOUNDATION OVERVIEW & BACKGROUND

The Friends of the River Walk is a 501c3 Corporation owned by Visit San Antonio with the intent to operate for charitable and educational purposes. Visit San Antonio has started the process to “reimagine” the non-profit as a foundation through which to provide local scholarships to students studying within the hospitality, tourism and travel disciplines. The Friends of the River Walk (FOTRW) 501c3 Corporation was acquired by Visit San Antonio in April 2021 when the San Antonio River Walk Association (SARWA), its former parent corporation, was integrated into Visit San Antonio. FOTRW was formed and previously operated to “enhance the community by providing recreation and free events on the San Antonio River Walk; to advocate renewal, recreation, and learning through nature in an urban setting for all in accordance with the Master Plan for San Antonio River Walk; and to operate exclusively for charitable, religious, literary, educational and scientific purposes within the meaning of 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.” Through Friends of the River Walk, the San Antonio River Walk Association raised money with the “River Walk Royalty” program and provided scholarships at UTSA within the school of architecture, honoring Robert H. H. Hugman, architect of the River Walk.
