Visit San Antonio celebrates NTTW, highlighting tourism and hospitality’s critical role in the local economy

SAN ANTONIO,TX (May 20, 2024) – San Antonio’s tourism and hospitality industry, a top five economic driver, is celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) May 19-25. In 2022, this industry made a monumental contribution, generating a record $19 billion in economic impact and supporting over 140,000 employees locally. A substantial portion of this positive impact, over $261 million, was directed toward city taxes, bolstering funding for improved infrastructure, property taxes and more.

“It is crucial that we continue to shine a spotlight on the power of tourism and hospitality and its transformative impact on local economies,” emphasized Marc Anderson, President and CEO of Visit San Antonio. “This vital sector not only creates jobs but also fosters cultural understanding and connects communities, a role that Visit San Antonio is proud to champion.”

The U.S. Travel Association founded National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) in 1983. Since then, destination marketing organizations across the country, including Visit San Antonio, have celebrated the numerous achievements of the tourism and hospitality industry. As the only entity in San Antonio proactively marketing the city for vacationers as well as meetings and conventions, Visit San Antonio’s mission is to bring the world to San Antonio by showcasing the city’s rich culture and heritage.

There are several industry appreciation events to mark NTTW, which include a community service event at the San Antonio International Airport May 21 and a Visit San Antonio member mixer May 22. Additionally, Visit San Antonio will launch this week a new local industry education program, the San Antonio Hospitality Champion. This new designation is designed for San Antonio enthusiasts to champion their beloved city. It will initially be rolled out to the community during the May 22 member mixer and available as online courses with in-person continuing education through Visit San Antonio’s website.

According to the U.S. Travel Association, travel and tourism has a $2.8 trillion economic footprint and supports 15 million American jobs. For more information on NTTW in San Antonio, go to the Visit San Antonio website.
