San Antonio, Texas (March 4, 2026) — Although San Antonio was geographically distant from the original thirteen British colonies and did not directly participate in the official American Revolution, the city played an essential role in supporting the revolutionaries. It provided both resources and strategic advantages, significantly influencing the nation’s struggle for freedom. To commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, San Antonio – Military City, USA – will host a series of events and exhibitions exploring the city’s surprising and vital role in the formation and growth of the United States.
The commemorations began in 2025 when San Antonio received the Daughters of the American Revolution’s (DAR) first America 250 Patriots Marker, located at the Spanish Governor’s Palace. Launched to support the commemoration, America 250 Patriot Markers are being placed across the country to honor those who supported the Revolutionary War.
Somos Americanos: Our American Story, at the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute, highlights the ways Mexican Americans have lived out the nation’s highest democratic ideals through public service, civic leadership, and acts of valor. Presenting stories from the battlefield to the halls of justice, from classrooms to boardrooms, the exhibit shows how Mexican Americans have put democracy into action. Opening in July 2026 as part of the America250 commemoration, Somos Americanos affirms that Mexican American history is American history.
Sacred Trails & Silent Allies: Native Vaqueros and the Cattle Trail to Revolution, presented by American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions, is an educational exhibition that explores the often-overlooked contributions of Native American vaqueros and San Antonio Mission ranching communities to the American Revolution. Through maps, topographical imagery, and archival materials from the Library of Congress and National Archives, the exhibition follows the cattle trails that carried thousands of livestock from Spanish Texas. These trails were essential in supporting Spanish and American forces as they united against the British Crown. Developed from a Native-centered perspective, Sacred Trails & Silent Allies highlights the Indigenous labor, land knowledge, and stewardship that sustained revolutionary armies. The exhibition reveals how communities far beyond the original thirteen colonies played a significant role in the eventual formation of the United States. By centering the San Antonio Missions as sites of agricultural production, cultural exchange, and resistance, the exhibition reframes early American history as a shared and interconnected story shaped by Native peoples of the region. Opens fall 2026.
Tejanos Legacy – Another American Origin Story, at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, tells the powerful story of Tejano origins – their struggles and triumphs, their profound connection to the land that is now Texas, and their enduring faith, culture, and traditions over four centuries. Opening Friday, July 24, 2026
