San Antonio, TX (August 21, 2024) – This fall, San Antonio invites visitors and locals alike to experience a season brimming with cultural festivities, art exhibitions and outdoor adventures that highlight the city's rich heritage and vibrant spirit.
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15)
Kick off the season by honoring the cultural contributions of Hispanic communities in San Antonio. Throughout the month, the city will host various events, including musical performances, art exhibits and culinary experiences that reflect the rich traditions of Hispanic culture. San Antonio is home to a vibrant array live music, traditional dance and cultural festivities honoring Mexico's Independence Day and rich heritage across the city. The city’s annual El Grito celebration on September 15, features live music, folkloric dancers, food and craft vendor booths then culminates in the "El Grito" call for independence civic ceremony hosted by the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio. At the Rey Feo Super Hero Festival and River Parade on September 28, the iconic River Walk will come alive with heroism, creativity and community spirit, all while supporting scholarships for local students.
9th Annual World Heritage Festival (Sept. 6-8)
Celebrating San Antonio's distinction as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this festival features cultural activities, live music, art, and community events, including the popular Tour de las Misiones bike ride, a festive 5K run/walk, and an evening concert under the stars at Mission San José.
Nation’s Largest Day of the Dead Celebrations (Oct. 27 – Nov. 3)
San Antonio’s Día de los Muertos, the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the United States, returns with vibrant parades, altar displays, and cultural performances. The Day of the Dead River Parade, features elaborately decorated floats along the San Antonio River Walk, bringing together thousands to honor the memory of loved ones. Throughout the city, various locations such as Market Square, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and local businesses set up community altars. These ofrendas are adorned with photographs, flowers, candles, and offerings to honor deceased loved ones. Visitors can participate in these traditions by adding their own contributions or simply observing the beautiful displays. Muertos Fest (Oct 26-27) returns to the Hemisfair park for an 11th year of celebration with a two-day celebration.
Spooky and Scary Halloween in the Theme Park Capital of Texas (Sept. – Nov., select dates)
As the Theme Park Capital of Texas, San Antonio offers unique opportunities to celebrate fall. SeaWorld San Antonio's Howl-O-Scream returns from September 13 to October 27, transforming the park into a terrifying nighttime experience. Visitors can explore haunted houses, scare zones and enjoy themed shows. Six Flags Fiesta Texas' Fright Fest is a popular event for thrill-seekers. Running from September 7 to November 3, Fright Fest features haunted attractions, themed rides and scare zones. Inside the historic Brackenridge Park, Zoo Boo at San Antonio Zoo takes place from September 21 to October 31. This family-friendly event invites children to dress up in Halloween costumes and enjoy trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting and other fun activities throughout the zoo. New in 2024, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens debuts Happy Frights, running from October 4 to November 2. This event features spooky light displays, interactive storytelling and family-friendly activities, offering a magical experience that blends the beauty of nature with the thrill of Halloween.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights (November 2)
Celebrate Diwali in San Antonio’s Hemisfair park, where the city's annual Festival of Lights will showcase the rich culture of India through mesmerizing dance performances, live music and delicious cuisine. The event will light up the River Walk with thousands of diyas (oil lamps) and a spectacular fireworks display over the downtown skyline. Join the community in this vibrant celebration that honors Indian heritage and brings together people of all backgrounds.
Food with a Purpose
Food enthusiasts will not want to miss ¡Provecho! on October 2, where guests can savor innovative dishes from top chefs and culinary students, all while supporting the next generation of culinary and hospitality leaders. This event, themed "Flavors of the Future," features an awards ceremony recognizing excellence in San Antonio’s culinary industry. The Alamo City is a wonderful destination to experience Oktoberfest, bringing a taste of Bavaria to Texas with traditional German fare and festivities, September 20-22.
