From UNESCO World Heritage festivities and Fiestas Patrias to Halloween thrills, Diwali and contemporary arts, San Antonio packs fall with culture and jubilee

San Antonio, Texas (September 10, 2026) – This fall, San Antonio invites travelers to experience its distinctive Spirit Season, when centuries of heritage, vibrant cultural traditions and Halloween thrills fill the city from September through mid November. With patio-perfect weather setting the stage, visitors can explore UNESCO-recognized missions, celebrate Mexican American heritage, experience one of the country’s largest Día de los Muertos celebrations and discover family-friendly fun and after-dark scares at some of the city’s top attractions.

Celebrate San Antonio’s Heritage
Fall begins with the 11th Annual World Heritage Festival, September 9-13, celebrating the San Antonio Missions, the first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas. Educational programs, family activities and special events explore the Indigenous and Spanish cultures woven into the missions’ history. On September 12, Tour de Las Misiones invites participants to bike, walk or run through San Antonio’s historic mission landscape.

That same weekend, Fiestas Patrias celebrates Mexican Independence and San Antonio’s deep Mexican American heritage. The 45th Annual Dieciséis de Septiembre Parade steps off September 12 in the historic Avenida Guadalupe neighborhood, followed that evening by San Antonio’s official El Grito Cultural Program and Civic Ceremony at Historic Market Square. Fiestas Patrias Weekend, September 12–13, continues the celebration with mariachi and folklórico performances, food, artisan vendors and family activities.

Feel the Jazz’SAlive
Jazz’SAlive returns on September 25-26, at Civic Park at Hemisfair. San Antonio’s official jazz festival offers free general admission and features live music, food and activities for all ages.

Experience San Antonio’s Spirit Season
October brings San Antonio’s Spirit Season to life as Día de los Muertos traditions and Halloween celebrations unfold throughout the city.

From October 2 through November 2, Día de los Muertos transforms the River Walk with art, food and traditions of remembrance. The new Culinary Spirits presented by Hennessy features seasonal dishes and cocktails at participating restaurants, while the Tradition Trail fills the River Walk with altars, colorful calaveras and whimsical alebrijes. GO RIO’s Rio de la Vida, select days October 4 through November 1, offers special river cruises exploring the history and cultural significance of alebrijes.

The celebration reaches its peak October 23-25. The signature Day of the Dead River Parade returns October 23, when illuminated barges, music and performers bring the San Antonio River to life. Nearby at La Villita, the free San Antonio Day of the Dead Festival features live music, traditional food, family activities, cultural demonstrations, artists, ofrendas and colorful installations, including nearly 40-foot-tall Catrín and Catrina figures.

Downtown’s newest luxury hotel, The Monarch San Antonio, joins the festivities October 22 with two distinctive cultural and culinary experiences. An immersive iLaCatrina Runway Show brings La Catrina to life through fashion, live narration, music and visual storytelling, while La Cena De Las Mariposa offers a three-course, chef-driven dinner in partnership with Loco Tequila beneath the stained glass of the hotel’s butterfly-inspired La Mariposa pavilion.

Additional celebrations include the Calaverita Run 5K & Family Walk at Pearl on October 24, Día de los Muertos festivities at Historic Market Square, October 24-25, and community-wide programming at Pearl, October 27 through November 3. Centro Cultural Aztlan’s 49th Annual “Altares y Ofrendas” exhibition continues the season November 2-12 with Día de los Muertos altars created by local artists and community members.

Find Halloween Thrills After Dark
Travelers looking for a scarier side of Spirit Season can find thrills throughout October. Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld at SeaWorld San Antonio and Fright Fest at Six Flags Fiesta Texas run on select dates September 11 through November 1, bringing haunted attractions, scare zones, live entertainment and thrill rides after dark.

Families can opt for gentler Halloween fun at San Antonio Zoo’s Zoo Boo, September 19 through October 31, featuring festive décor, fall treats, animal encounters and select-day trick-or-treating and entertainment. Morgan’s Wonderland Halloween Bash also welcomes guests every weekend in October with costumes, seasonal entertainment, treats and activities.

Keep the Celebration Going into November
San Antonio’s fall calendar continues beyond Día de los Muertos. On November 7, DiwaliSA brings the Festival of Lights to Hemisfair with traditional Indian dance and entertainment, regional cuisine, artisan vendors, colorful attire, a ceremonial candle-lighting along the River Walk and a concluding fireworks display.

Then, on November 14, the free Luminaria Contemporary Arts Festival transforms downtown’s Houston Street into an illuminated canvas from 6 p.m. to midnight. Live music, film, digital art, poetry, theater, dance and large-scale installations invite visitors to experience downtown San Antonio in an entirely new light.

From centuries-old traditions and colorful community celebrations to illuminated river parades and heart-pounding Halloween attractions, fall offers travelers a chance to experience the history, cultures and creative spirit that make San Antonio unlike anywhere else.
