SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS, August 18th, 2022 — Mark your calendars for November 1st, and tune in as NBCUniversal’s Peacock broadcasts a one-hour, national, SPIRITLANDIA television special, featuring San Antonio’s fourth annual Day of the Dead river parade, hosted by Access Hollywood star Mario Lopez.
The one-hour Peacock show, streaming on English and Spanish stations nationwide, will be the first nationally televised Day of the Dead event in the U.S., offering a star-studded evening of remembrance featuring music, awards, and tributes.
The parade is just one of many exciting Day of the Dead celebrations held throughout the city, including the newly named, four-day SPIRITLANDIA festival on October 27th-30th at La Villita and the River Walk. Some of America’s favorite celebrities will be featured in this year’s dynamic lineup.
Concerts, dance performances, culinary events, folk art and family fun will be found all over town during this heart-felt holiday of joyful commemoration. Delighting guests with live music, culinary pleasures, artistic delights, elegantly adorned Catrina skeletons, elaborate costumes, candlelit altars and more, SPIRITLANDIA festivities offer enjoyment for all ages. Viewers will also be thrilled by the spectacular nighttime river parade, held live at the Arneson River Theatre on Thursday, October 27th, then broadcast on television on Day of the Dead, Tuesday, November 1st.
Another magnificent SPIRITLANDIA treat at La Villita will be the giant Day of the Dead skulls on display from the colorful new Calavera Collection, each hand-painted by gifted San Antonio artists, along with large, playful Alebrije (“Spirit Animals”) created by some of Mexico’s most talented artisans.
“Embracing 3,000-plus years of rich, cultural traditions, San Antonio’s Day of the Dead celebration is the largest in the USA, attracting more than 300,000 locals and visitors alike,” says festival founder and celebrity chef, Johnny Hernandez. “San Antonio is proud to be the nation’s definitive Day of the Dead destination.
