A CENTURY OF HISTORY, REIMAGINED

The building that will become home to Aztec Hotel carries one of San Antonio’s most storied legacies. Erected in 1926 at the corner of E. Commerce Street and N. St. Mary’s Street, the structure was originally conceived as a grand motion picture palace — one of the most elaborate of its era anywhere in the United States. Designed by the celebrated architectural firm of Meyer & Holler, whose portfolio included Sid Grauman’s legendary Egyptian and Chinese Theatres in Hollywood, the building was crafted in the Meso-American Revival style, drawing on the ancient visual language of Aztec and pre-Columbian Mexico.

The grand opening on June 4, 1926 was nothing short of spectacular: a 26-piece orchestra performed for an opening-night crowd of more than 6,000 eager San Antonians. The interior was a feast for the senses — polychromed plasterwork, towering columns adorned with stylized Aztec warriors, sweeping relief sculptures drawn from ancient Mexican temples, and a massive three-ton chandelier hailed as the largest in all of Texas. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1992, the building has served San Antonio in many forms across its nearly 100-year life. Now, under the stewardship of Shreem Capital, its most extraordinary chapter begins.
