San Antonio, TX (October 29, 2024) — The 30th Annual Mariachi Extravaganza is just five weeks away, promising an unforgettable celebration of mariachi music with world-renowned talent and a historic level of participation. After three decades of showcasing exceptional mariachi performances with artists from both the U.S. and Mexico, this year’s event marks a milestone anniversary that will surpass expectations, featuring Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán as the headliner.
Returning to the Mariachi Extravaganza stage, Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán brings an added prestige as they come off a world tour with international superstar Luis Miguel. Under the musical direction of Carlos Martinez, Mariachi Vargas sets the standard of excellence for mariachi music and is widely known for their countless recordings, flawless performances and impeccable arrangements. Amongst the groups most accomplished work is their tour and recording of Linda Ronstadt’s Canciones de Mi Padre album which became a global success.
The festival anticipates a record breaking year with nearly 1,000 mariachi musicians competing in three full days of national competitions. Among the anticipated highlights is a showdown between top university groups, including UTSA’s Mariachi Los Paisanos, Harvard University’s Mariachi Veritas de Harvard, and Florida State University’s Mariachi Osceola. Top contenders competing in the Mariachi Extravaganza National Vocal Competition Semifinals will be announced today at 6 PM CST on the Mariachi Extravaganza Facebook page. The national competitions will take place December 5-7, showcasing the rigorous training, passion, and artistry that define this genre.
This year’s Mariachi Extravaganza also celebrates the acclaimed documentary Going Varsity in Mariachi, currently streaming on Netflix, which highlights the competitive spirit of high school mariachi through Edinburg North High School’s Mariachi Oro. Abel Acuña, director of Mariachi Oro and a central figure in the documentary, will be joined by filmmakers Alejandra Vasquez and Sam Osborn. Mayor Ron Nirenberg will honor Sam and Alejandra with the Emissary of the Muses award for spotlighting San Antonio and the Mariachi Extravaganza through the film. Additional official recognitions include an acknowledgment from the Texas Music Office signed by Governor Greg Abbott and proclamations from the City of San Antonio and Bexar County.
Adding a unique cultural fusion to the closing concert, the festival will feature National Competition winners alongside New York City-based Ballet Nepantla and Mariachi Aztlán, leading into Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán’s main performance on Saturday, December 7.
