Say “gay Texas” and most people are likely to imagine club hopping in Austin, Dallas, or even Houston. San Antonio may not even come to mind as any sort of LGBTQ+ hot spot in the country’s second most populous state. But this dynamic city, founded more than 300 years ago, is brimming with queer pride — and on a recent visit there, I was overwhelmed by all that I discovered.

At a center table in Clementine, a stylish restaurant in the Castle Hills neighborhood of San Antonio, the lights seem to shine—as they often do—on Amber Nixx. A prominent drag performer, pageant winner, and owner of the Miss Gay San Antonio pageant, she picks at a plate of hush puppies with wildflower honey and entertains my questions.
Discover the River Walk’s Museum Reach, adorned with Pearl, the San Antonio Museum of Art and more. This neighborhood is also home to San Antonio’s Rainbow Crosswalk.
All signs point south for local art, flavors and fun. Experience the city’s creative community in this trendy, yet historic district.
