As the weather warms, it's time to start planning summer travel. This year, the 4th of July falls on a Friday, making it a proper long weekend—no PTO required. Take advantage of the holiday weekend with a trip that won’t break the bank. These destinations won't max out your holiday budget, with gorgeous public spaces, affordable activities, and free 4th of July events to pack the itinerary.
San Antonio, Texas
The well-known San Antonio Riverwalk is ideal for an evening dining out on a string-lit patio, admiring public art installations, or just enjoying the weather along the water. The city offers several free parks with stunning features, including the stone bridges of the Japanese Tea Garden, the hiking trails at Brackenridge Park, and the pools at San Pedro Springs Park. Visiting the Alamo is free, as is admission to Artpace, a nonprofit contemporary art museum. The 4th of July this year also coincides with July’s First Friday Art Walk, an art crawl with live music, free gallery entry, and street vendors.
