Visit "Dining with Rolando Briseño: A 50-Year Retrospective" at Centro de Artes Gallery

On View September 5, 2024 - February 9, 2025

You won't want to miss the first retrospective devoted to this Mexican American artist, Chicano activist, and culinary historian, Rolando Briseño. This exhibit features pieces from his life’s work, dating from 1966 to present day and includes more than 75 drawings, lithographs, paintings, photographs, public artworks, and pieces that survived a devastating studio fire in 1985.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in San Antonio with a unique theatrical experience! Classic Theatre and San Pedro Playhouse proudly present the world premiere of The Fantastikos, a bilingual adaptation of the beloved musical The Fantasticks.

Running from September 12 to 29, this enchanting production combines English and Spanish storytelling, featuring captivating music, choreography, and a whimsical tale of love and self-discovery. Directed by José Rubén De León, this special adaptation invites audiences of all ages to step into a magical world and enjoy a cultural celebration like no other.

Spend an Evening with the Author of “Remembering Conquest: Mexican Americans, Memory, and Citizenship”

Join the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center at the Latino Bookstore for a special Diez y Seis author reading by historian Omar Valerio-Jimenez on Friday, September 13 at 6 p.m. He will be reading from his new book “Remembering Conquest: Mexican Americans, Memory, and Citizenship.”

Visiting the San Antonio Museum of Art’s (SAMA) captivating exhibition, Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory. This nationally touring exhibition highlights the powerful work of Amalia Mesa-Bains, an influential artist and cultural critic known for her innovative altar installations.

Explore 40 thought-provoking works created over more than three decades, including ten immersive installations and a new large-scale sculpture inspired by the Mexica afterlife. Join us for the opening weekend and engage in a conversation with Mesa-Bains and esteemed scholar Tomás Ybarra-Frausto on September 20 at 6:00 p.m.

Enjoy a variety of related events, such as a community ofrenda, a movie screening, and art studios for kids and teens, making this an enriching cultural experience for all ages. Don’t miss this extraordinary celebration of Chicana art and heritage at SAMA this fall!

 

Attend the Rey Feo Super Hero Festival & River Parade

September 28, 2024

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a day of superhero fun at the Rey Feo Super Hero Festival & River Parade at the Arneson River Theatre on the San Antonio River Walk. This vibrant, action-packed event benefits the Rey Feo Scholarship, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting scholarships for local students.

Every year, the iconic River Walk transforms into a lively spectacle with the Super Hero River Parade, drawing thousands of locals and visitors to celebrate heroism, creativity, and community spirit along the scenic San Antonio River.

 

Let the Music Move You at the 1st Annual Latin Jazz & Arts Festival

Get ready for an exciting day of events at the 1st Annual Latin Jazz & Arts Festival at the UTSA Downtown Campus-Bill Miller Plaza.  Expect a day filled with exciting events! The festival kicks off with a FREE music symposium for children ages 4 to 10, followed by “Salsa For Seniors,” sponsored by Gonzaba Medical Group. San Antonio Missions

You may be familiar with The Alamo, but did you know that the city is also home to San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a member of the National Park Service and part of the first and only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas? Centro de Artes Gallery is dedicated to telling the stories of the Latino experience.
