A 5-Day San Antonio Itinerary Built for Families

Spring break in San Antonio is made for families who want a mix of big adventures and easy moments. This five-day itinerary will help you explore the city without feeling rushed, with a smart balance of hands-on attractions, outdoor fun, and time to recharge.

From downtown highlights and River Walk strolls to underground caves, drive-through safaris, theme park thrills, and kid-focused museums, this guide is designed to help families see more, stress less, and actually enjoy every day of the trip.

Day 1 | Downtown Highlights & River Walk Exploring

Back to Top of List

Morning: Alamo and Downtown vibes

Kick off your Spring Break trip with an easy morning downtown. Grab a quick breakfast near your hotel or pop into a nearby coffee shop for a pastry and caffeine boost before heading out.

Start your day around Alamo Plaza, where families can walk, explore, and get a feel for the heart of San Antonio. This area is perfect for easing into the trip, snapping photos, and letting kids stretch their legs. Remember, while timed entry tickets to the Alamo are free, they must be booked in advance.

From here, you are steps away from restaurants, attractions, and plenty of kid-friendly fun.

Afternoon: Hands-on family fun at the Shops at Rivercenter

Mother, father, and two kids walking through marine tunnel at SEA LIFE San Antonio.

Head over to The Shops at Rivercenter for an afternoon packed with interactive attractions that work especially well for Spring Break crowds.

Inside Rivercenter, LEGOLAND Discovery Center is a favorite for younger kids, especially children around the ages of three to ten. Enjoy small rides, a 4D movie, and a detailed mini version of San Antonio built entirely out of LEGO bricks. It is a great place for kids to build and play indoors.

Plan to knock out the rides and 4D movie early, then slow things down in the LEGO build areas and the San Antonio miniature display. Kids love spotting familiar landmarks in LEGO form.

Right next door, SEA LIFE San Antonio keeps the fun going with walk-through tunnels, glowing tanks, and up-close views of sharks, rays, and colorful fish. Take your time in the tunnel and hands-on areas. This attraction moves at an easy pace and works well if you have a stroller or younger kids in tow.

INSIDER TIP: These two attractions are right next to each other; enjoy savings when you book combo tickets.

Lunch: A jungle-themed crowd pleaser

Dining room with fake trees

When hunger hits, walk over to Rainforest Cafe for lunch. The jungle setting, animatronic animals, and indoor thunderstorms are always a hit with younger kids.

It's spring break, so expect a potential wait. Put your name on the list early or make reservations ahead of time.

Late afternoon: Fun near Alamo Plaza

After lunch, head back toward Alamo Plaza for a burst of fast-paced excitement at Amazing Mirror Maze Escape. This colorful attraction combines mirrors, lights, and a laser challenge that keeps kids and teens engaged.

Evening: River Walk dinner

Conclude your first day with a stroll along the San Antonio River Walk as the lights come on and the water taxis glide by. Choose a riverside restaurant for dinner and soak in the atmosphere.

Plan ahead and make dinner reservations when possible!

Day 2 | Natural Bridge Caverns & Safari Drive

Back to Top of List

Note: This day works best if traveling by car.

Morning – Explore underground at Natural Bridge Caverns

Emerald Lake in the Discovery Cavern

Kick off Day 2 with a short drive north of downtown to Natural Bridge Caverns, one of the most popular family attractions near San Antonio. Guided cavern tours take you deep underground to see massive formations and winding passageways.

Fun fact: Inside the caverns, the temperature stays cool at 70 degrees year-round, making this a great option even if spring weather turns warm or drizzly.

Tours are family-friendly and easy to follow, and the steady pace works well for kids of different ages. After your tour, let kids burn off extra energy above ground with attractions like gem and fossil mining, ropes courses, or outdoor play areas.

Booking your cavern tour time in advance is strongly recommended, especially during spring break.

Afternoon – Drive-through wildlife adventure

NaturalBridgeWildlifeRanch_Banner

Just a few minutes up the road is Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a drive-through safari that gives everyone a chance to relax while still having fun. Stay in your car as giraffes, zebras, ostriches, and other animals roam freely around you, often coming right up to the window for feed and photos.

This is an especially nice break after a morning of walking and climbing. Kids love the up-close animal encounters, and parents appreciate the slower pace and minimal effort. Plan about 90 minutes to two hours, depending on how long you want to linger or if you decide to loop through more than once.

Evening – Dinner and downtime at the Pearl

After heading back toward San Antonio, wrap up the day at the Pearl, a favorite spot for families to unwind. There’s plenty of open space for kids to run around, a scenic riverfront path for an easy stroll, and lots of casual dining options.

Pearl Food Hall Exterior with Front Garden

For a low-stress dinner, Pearl Food Hall at Bottling Department is a great choice. Multiple food counters make it easy for picky eaters and mixed appetites, and the relaxed atmosphere is perfect after a full day of exploring.

Grab dessert, enjoy the evening breeze, and call it an early night before another adventure-packed day.

Day 3 | Theme Park Day: Choose Your Adventure

Back to Top of List

San Antonio is home to major theme parks, and spring break is the perfect time to plan a full-day visit.

Whether your family loves heart-pounding rides, animal encounters, or a mix of both, this day is designed to let you choose the experience that best suits your crew.

And while we've only baked in one day in this itinerary for theme parks, it's only because there's just so much to do in San Antonio! Stay longer and take advantage of all of our theme parks!

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Six Flags Fiesta Texas is a great choice for families with thrill-seekers and older kids, offering a wide variety of roller coasters, family rides, shows, and themed areas. During spring, seasonal festivals and live entertainment are layered into the park experience, adding even more to see and do beyond the rides.

Families with younger kids will also find dedicated children’s areas, character interactions, and plenty of spots to take a break between attractions. Plan to arrive early, pace yourselves through the afternoon, and take advantage of indoor shows or shaded areas if crowds build.

SeaWorld San Antonio

SeaWorld San Antonio offers a different kind of theme park day, combining rides with animal encounters and educational exhibits. Families can mix thrill rides and water attractions with opportunities to learn about marine life, see live shows, and explore interactive exhibits.

This park works especially well for families with a range of ages, since it offers both adventurous rides and slower-paced experiences throughout the day. Spring weather is ideal for being outdoors, and there are plenty of dining and rest areas built into the park for easy breaks.

Morgan’s Wonderland

Morgan’s Wonderland is a one-of-a-kind theme park built around inclusive play, with rides and attractions designed for guests of all abilities. The park features wide pathways, sensory-friendly experiences, and interactive attractions that encourage imagination and exploration rather than high-speed thrills.

This is an excellent option for families with younger children or those looking for a more relaxed, welcoming environment that still feels special and memorable.

Located about 30 minutes north of San Antonio, Schlitterbahn Waterpark is a popular choice for families who want to spend the day splashing, floating, and cooling off. With a mix of water rides, river floats, and areas designed for different ages, it works best for warm spring days and families who enjoy being outdoors.

Evening – Wind down and stay flexible

After a full theme park day, most families appreciate a low-key evening.

Head back toward your hotel area for dinner, keep plans simple, and focus on recharging.

Day 4 | Hands on Fun and Immersive Art

Back to Top of List

Morning – Hands-on play at The DoSeum

Start Day 4 at The DoSeum, San Antonio’s children’s museum, designed entirely around hands-on learning and play. Arriving close to opening helps you beat spring break crowds and gives kids plenty of space to explore right away.

During spring, The DoSeum is hosting the Bug Squad exhibit, a high-energy experience where kids climb, crawl, and interact with oversized “superhero” bugs. Expect big movement and creative play. Inside the museum, you’ll also find STEM activities, imaginative play areas, and exhibits designed for a wide range of ages.

There are indoor and outdoor spaces, plus options for snacks or a quick lunch, making it easy to stay flexible depending on your family’s pace.

Afternoon – Midday rest and reset

After a busy morning, head back to your hotel for a break. A little downtime goes a long way, especially during spring break. This is a great window for naps, pool time if the weather is warm, or quiet time before heading out again.

If you're looking for something relaxing, head to Hemisfair for great food options and spend some time at Yanaguana Garden and Civic Park.

Building in this rest period helps everyone recharge and keeps the rest of the day feeling fun instead of rushed.

Late afternoon – Optional immersive art experience

If your family is still craving fun, consider a late afternoon visit to Hopscotch, an immersive art experience in downtown San Antonio. Colorful rooms, light installations, and interactive exhibits make it especially appealing for older kids and teens who enjoy creative spaces and photo-friendly moments.

Please note: Hopscotch becomes Adult-Only beginning at 7 pm on Fridays and Sundays.

If your kids are younger or feeling tired, feel free to skip this and keep things simple with extra pool time or a short walk near your hotel.

Evening – Casual dinner

After a full day of exploration, keep dinner simple and flexible. San Antonio has family-friendly restaurants across the city, making it easy to find a relaxed spot near your hotel or next day’s activities.

Look for casual restaurants with quick service, outdoor seating, or shareable menus so kids can wind down after a busy day. Many neighborhoods offer local favorites that welcome families, whether you’re staying downtown, near the Pearl, on the northwest side, or closer to the airport.

Day 5 | San Antonio Zoo & Outdoor Family Fun

Back to Top of List

Morning – San Antonio Zoo

Spend the morning at the San Antonio Zoo, located in Brackenridge Park and home to thousands of animals from around the world. The zoo is easy to navigate, family-friendly, and well-suited for a relaxed morning of exploring at your own pace.

Be sure to stop by Congo Falls where you'll see some of the newest members of the San Antonio Zoo family - the gorillas! Take advantage of hands-on learning areas and shaded paths for a more comfortable experience on warmer spring days.

Afternoon – Brackenridge Park or nearby attractions

After the zoo, stay nearby and enjoy more outdoor time in Brackenridge Park. Families can spread out, let kids run around, or enjoy a picnic before heading back to the hotel for rest time.

If you prefer another attraction instead of park time, this is a good window to visit a nearby museum, like the Witte Museum, hop on a short train ride through the park, or explore another family-friendly spot close to where you’re staying.

Keeping the afternoon flexible helps everyone finish the trip feeling relaxed rather than rushed.

Evening – Choose-your-own dinner finale

For your final evening, pick a dinner spot that fits your family’s mood and location. Whether that means a neighborhood favorite near your hotel, a casual restaurant with outdoor seating, or revisiting a spot you loved earlier in the week, this is a great night to keep plans easy and celebratory.

End the trip with a low-key walk, dessert stop, or early night so everyone heads home happy and rested.
