Cinco de Mayo in San Antonio is more than just great food and festive drinks. It’s a vibrant celebration of culture, music, community, and the enduring influence of Hispanic heritage on the heart of our city.

While the holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla, in San Antonio it’s also a time to honor traditions, support local artists and performers, and come together for lively events that blend history with fun.

From mariachi concerts to cultural festivals to, yes, a few delicious tacos and margaritas, here’s how to celebrate Cinco de Mayo the San Antonio way.

But wait...what is Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May, commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Though it’s a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, primarily observed in the state of Puebla, it has become widely celebrated in the United States as a way to honor Mexican culture, pride, and heritage.

Over time, the day has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Mexican-American traditions, especially in culturally rich cities like San Antonio.
