Your Totally Wild Weekend in San Antonio

3 Days | 5 Iconic Attractions | 80+ Animal Experiences

San Antonio has a wild side, and a weekend is just enough time to explore it. From splashing dolphins and towering giraffes to sharks gliding overhead and rhinos roaming open savanna, the Alamo City packs more animal encounters per square mile than almost anywhere in Texas.

The best part? Every attraction on this itinerary is within 30 minutes of downtown San Antonio, so you spend less time driving and more time doing what you came here for: getting wild.

Day 1: Make a Splash at SeaWorld San Antonio

Back to Top of List

Best for: Marine life lovers, thrill seekers, and families who want it all in one park

Start your totally wild weekend where the experiences are as big as the ocean itself. SeaWorld San Antonio is the largest marine-life waterpark in the country — and it earns that title. Plan to spend a full day here, because between the animal encounters, shows, and rides, you won't want to leave early.

Morning

Arrive when the park opens to beat the crowds and head straight to your reserved animal experience. The Killer Whale Tour and Shark Tour are perennial favorites, but if you've never stood face-to-face with a beluga whale or hand-fed a bottlenose dolphin at an interactive exhibit, those are must-dos.

The Rescue Tour is a meaningful add-on for families who want to connect the fun to real-world conservation.

Afternoon

After lunch, explore the park's immersive penguin and puffin exhibits before cooling off on the waterpark side. Traveling with VIP ambitions? Upgrade to the SeaWorld Ultimate VIP Tour for exclusive behind-the-scenes access and once-in-a-lifetime moments throughout the park.

Evening (Summer)

Don't leave before dark — if you're visiting select days in June through August, Electric Ocean transforms the park into a dazzling evening spectacle of lights, music, and entertainment. It's one of the most memorable ways to end a San Antonio summer night.

Pro tip: Book your animal experience tickets in advance. Spots for tours like the Killer Whale Tour sell out fast, especially on weekends.

Day 2: Go Wild at the San Antonio Zoo

Best for: Families with young kids, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to feed a giraffe

Spend a day at the San Antonio Zoo, and in just one afternoon, you'll see why it's been rated the #1 Zoo in Texas. With more than 700 species spread across 50+ acres, this is one of the most diverse zoo experiences in the South. Plan for a full day, but prioritize the animal encounters early before the Texas heat peaks.

Morning

Head straight to Giraffe Feeding (available daily 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.) for a face-to-face moment with the world's tallest land animal. It's one of those experiences that looks good on camera but feels even better in person. From there, make your way to Kangaroo Krossing and Flamingo Mingo for interactive encounters that are especially magical for younger kids.

Midday

Cool off with lunch at one of the zoo's dining options, then head to the brand-new Congo Falls, a two-acre immersive gorilla habitat where gorillas return to San Antonio for the first time in over 35 years. It's one of the most talked-about new wildlife exhibits in Texas right now, and it lives up to the hype.

Afternoon (Summer)

If you're visiting May 30 through September 7, 2026, Zoorassic Park adds a roar to your afternoon. 16 massive animatronic dinosaurs are scattered throughout the grounds, making for some seriously fun detours between habitats. Keep an eye out for behind-the-scenes opportunities with armadillos, hippos, capybaras, okapis, rhinos, butterflies, and tortoises.

Level up: Looking for something more exclusive? The zoo's VIP Tours, including After-Hours experiences and Expedition Adventures, give you access that most visitors never see. Overnight guests can even book a stay at Spekboom Lodge to extend the adventure.

Day 3: Dive Deep + Explore the Wild Outdoors

Best for: Ocean-curious families, nature lovers, and anyone who wants a slower, scenic close to the weekend

Your final day takes in two very different sides of San Antonio's wild landscape, the deep-blue world of SEA LIFE San Antonio and the restored natural beauty of the San Antonio River. Together, they make for a perfect, unhurried send-off to your totally wild weekend.

Morning: SEA LIFE San Antonio

Start your morning at SEA LIFE San Antonio, home to the only underwater ocean tunnel in the city. Step inside and watch sharks and rays glide directly overhead in a full 360-degree underwater experience — it never gets old, no matter how old you are. From there, explore the interactive Rockpool, where you can touch real sea creatures and learn about their habitats, and don't miss the stingray bay for one of the most unexpected animal encounters in Texas.

Want to go deeper? The Behind-the-Scenes Tour pulls back the curtain on what really happens beneath the surface at SEA LIFE — an experience that's equal parts fascinating and educational.

Visiting July 30 through October 10, 2026? The Animal Crossing: Horizons Tour brings beloved characters like Tom Nook and Isabelle to the aquarium for photo ops and meet-and-greets — a major hit with Nintendo fans of all ages.

Afternoon: San Antonio River & Mission Reach

After a morning underwater, trade the ocean for the outdoors. The San Antonio River Authority's Mission Reach represents the largest urban stream restoration project in the country, 908 acres of restored habitat home to more than 275 species, including 210+ bird species. It's free, it's beautiful, and it's one of the best-kept secrets on the San Antonio wildlife trail.

Stroll or bike the river trail and keep your eyes open for native wildlife along the restored banks. Seasonal wildflowers, native plantings, and the gentle rhythm of the river make this the perfect unhurried end to a big weekend. For a deeper experience, the Mission Reach Public Tour offers a guided exploration of this remarkable ecosystem — just note that reservations are required at least two weeks in advance and tours are recommended for ages 10 and up.

Check the San Antonio River Authority's event calendar before your visit — summer programming includes free camping weekends, Cinema Nights, and Wildlife Hikes that make an already great experience even better.
