Who is Kristina Salinas?
A South Texas native, Kristina Salinas has combined her creative abilities with her love for her heritage.
Her earliest memory of becoming fascinated with art dates to when she was just six years old. Sitting outside her childhood home in Laredo, Texas, she became captivated by the movement of the muscles in her father's legs as he mowed the lawn. Driven by an irresistible urge, she sketched him in her notebook.
“I’ve had a propensity to admire the human figure and how it works,” said Salinas.
The Meaning Behind the Creativity
That fateful day sparked the beginning of her artistic journey. Salinas describes herself as a creator, wanting to capture what she sees and transform it through her chosen medium. San Antonio became the city to host her first solo art show, giving her the encouragement to continue developing her craft.
When you first observe her work, your attention is immediately drawn to the human subjects. You'll see people of all ages, but most importantly, you'll recognize everyday moments rooted in her heritage—a woman and her child working outside, a man serving paletas on the street and a table full of aguas frescas. Her Hispanic culture is woven into every piece, creating a sense of familiarity and relatability for her viewers.
Every artist creates a space that reflects their craft. For Salinas, that space is the carriage house behind her home. Her artwork fills the room, even lining the staircase as you walk up. Natural light pours through the windows while paint stains linger on the iPad playing hip-hop music in the background. Even the charger connected to her device bears painted fingerprints—a reminder that creativity reaches every corner of her studio.
Where Can You Visit Her Art
Salinas has several exhibitions that should be on your radar.
Her current exhibit “Shifting Terrain”, a collaboration show, is on display in Bee Cave, Texas, from July 11 to August 7. Her work is also available for purchase.
In October, she'll return to San Antonio with "Someplace Else," an exhibition at the Blue Star Art Complex gallery “Un Grito”. The show explores immigration stories and serves as a continuation of her previous body of work.
She will also participate in another October collaborative exhibition at Centro de Artes titled "Mercado/Material." The exhibit will feature six to eight of her pieces alongside the work of fellow artists.
Salinas remains committed to honoring her heritage through both her artwork and galleries that celebrate it.
“It’s very important because there is a large social commentary component into my work because I am painting about my culture, which is shared with my entire community. I want to represent that well, and I feel great responsibility to capture that correctly...in a way that uplifts and pays homage to [my] culture. It’s a beautiful thing,” said Salinas.
Perfect Day in San Antonio
According to Salinas, no perfect day begins without breakfast tacos. Her favorite place to grab a carne asada taco is Thousand Oaks Cafe.
Her ideal day in San Antonio would take place during Fiesta. She especially loves Chanclas y Cervezas, saying she draws inspiration from the event while enjoying the lively music and atmosphere.
When it comes to San Antonio's vibrant art scene, some of her favorite places include the McNay Museum, the Blue Star Arts District and the Tree of Life at Mission Espada. Each offers its own unique collection while honoring local artists and preserving the city's rich cultural heritage.
