How does San Antonio celebrate St. Patrick's Day? With pachangas, parades, and cottage pies, of course! A time for green attire and spirited festivities, this holiday is among the many city-wide celebrations that showcase the diverse cultural tapestry of the Alamo City.
Whether you're a local or just passing through, here are some exciting ways to embrace the luck of the Irish in the Alamo City.
Watch the River Walk Turn Emerald Green
Kick off your St. Patrick's Day festivities with a stroll along the iconic River Walk and take in a unique sight: a dyed-green San Antonio River. The 2.5-mile downtown stretch is free to view and offers a perfect backdrop for those enjoying sips and bites outdoors from March 16-17, 2024.
Indulge in traditional Irish fare at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub and Waxy O’Connor’s, all the while hearing a bagpiper play on the dye boat.
Bud Light St. Patrick’s Festival & River Parades
Holidays in SATX and river parades are a match made in heaven; St. Pat’s Day is no exception. Don’t miss out on a procession of 12 Irish-themed decorated floats along the River Walk.
While you’re watching, grab a beer from surrounding vendors, listen to music at the Arneson Theater, and take part in a family-friendly interactive activity called Passport to Ireland. Catch the parade at Museum Reach from 2-3 PM and 5-6 PM in the downtown area of the River Walk on March 16, 2024.
Shop Artisan Crafts from Local Vendors
Commemorate your St. Pat’s Day weekend with a new wardrobe, home décor piece, or statement accessory by bringing something home from a downtown artisan show. Over 40 artists will display and sell their beautiful handmade merchandise along the San Antonio River Walk through the weekend. For even more artisan finds, head to La Villita Historic Arts Village.
Even more Irish Pubs and Eateries
Why cut your Gaelic gastronomic adventure short when you’ve got the perfect excuse to sample all the Irish-inspired cuisine around town? Enjoy staples like crispy fish and chips as well as other elevated pub fare at Francis Bogside.
The Cottage offers a more intimate and low-key alternative along with a full menu. Or head to Medical Center favorite The Irish Pub and Kennedy’s Public House in the Far North Central Side to wash it all down with a pint of Guinness or a refreshing glass of Irish whiskey.
Sign up for the Shamrock Shuffle
Lace up your running shoes and join in the 11th Annual Shamrock Shuffle, a jogger and stroller-friendly spirited 5K race along scenic shady paved park trails at Lady Bird Johnson Park in Northeast San Antonio.
Whether you're a seasoned runner or just looking for some fun exercise, this event promises a healthy dose of green-themed entertainment and camaraderie. Did we mention it’s also dog-friendly? A Shamrock Kid's 1K is also available for the little ones.
