Artist Workshop with Jerri Allyn: Create Your Own Empowerment Placemat
Join artist Jerri Allyn, whose work “The Waitresses” is featured in Men of Steel, Women of Wonder, to explore the makings of everyday superheroes and create a comic empowerment place mat. Let’s spin our “lassos of truth” to squarely face that “impossible task” – one that requires we draw on a super power to accomplish it. Do we also need to borrow Wonder Waitress’s “bracelets of victory”? A source of strength, these bulletproof shields allow her to bring forth courage and empathy in herself and the people she serves – customers, co-workers, bosses, friends and family alike. By the workshops end, we’ll be able to slip into our “Hermes sandals” (a gift from the fleet footed messenger of the Gods), and don our “mighty cape” to soar as far as we’d like to go! No art training necessary. Participants are invited to draft their own comic, or use templates of figures in action and facial expressions that Allyn will provide.
About The Waitresses – Jerri Allyn and Anne Gauldin
The Waitresses is a performance art collaborative founded by Jerri Allyn and Anne Gauldin. They draw upon their own waitressing experiences, incorporate research about working women, and often employ humor. Longer BIO: They focus on issues about work; pay equity; sexual harassment; fair food production; and stereotypes of women/waitresses – mother, servant, sex object. Their work has been exhibited in cultural centers, universities, on billboards, and in museums. Out of the gallery, into restaurants and the streets, they’ve performed in public sites internationally.
