Music for strings and piano from England in a time of great change, the end of the Victorian era. The program is anchored by Frank Bridge’s brooding Piano Quintet and opens with a youthful work by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (not to confused with the 18th century poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge). Well-known in his own time both in his home country and abroad, Coleridge-Taylor was an English composer of mixed racial background perhaps best known for his oratorio The Song of Hiawatha. His music is enjoying renewed attention from performers and audiences.
