Teardowns Performance Ft. David Hurlin and Laeree
Please join Blue Star Contemporary and exhibiting artist Joey Fauerso for a special evening of performance activating her exhibition Teardowns currently on view in BSC’s main gallery. The event features performance artist Laeree and musician David Hurlin. Also take this opportunity to talk with Fauerso in person about the work on view.
David Hurlin is a composer, drummer, tabla player, poet, performance artist, devotee of Lord Shiva. Hurlin is known for his dynamic range which aims to be expressive of the whole spectrum of human emotion. David is continually in the process of honing his wildly eclectic style. He has toured the midwest with his free-funk jazz trio The Apocalypso Tantric Boys Choir of Memphis. Parallel to the Boys Choir Hurlin co-founded, funk band Spermwhale where he got into hip-hop, didjerydoo, Reeds Ginger Brew, early morning Kung-Fu, singing rounds, and tabla. After graduating from Maharishi University of Management with a BFA in photography and a minor in the Indian Classical Music known as Gandharva Veda, David moved to New Delhi where he continued his studies of tabla with his Guru, Anup Ghoshji. In 2007 Anupji and David performed together for the first time in a riveting drum set v. tabla battle. After the birth of his son Dil Mondrian Hurlin, David joined the Jefferson County Green Band and toured the mid west again, playing biker rallies, casinos, racetracks, riverside bars, and festivals getting schooled in his local hillbilly culture and developing a fierce Folsom Prison train chug, and a showstopping hard hat drum solo.
Laeree is a visual and performance artist based in San Antonio, Texas. A graduate of Texas State University in San Marcos, TX Laeree’s practice explores themes of identity, theatre, digital culture, romanticism, desire, fantasy, and gender, while advocating and creating space for LGBTQIA communities. Learee has worked in collaboration with Teardowns artist Joey Fauerso to activate artworks in the exhibition and can be seen featured in videos on view in the exhibition.
