We take pride in celebrating our active service men and women, and veterans.
San Antonio is home to one of the largest concentrations of military bases in the United States. San Antonio is also home to the Department of Defense’s largest medical center at Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston. We are very proud to welcome the families of the 39,000 students who graduate from military training here each year, because for us, training, equipping and caring for America’s service members is a way of life. We are Military City, USA ®. And, we could not be more proud.
Our city’s deep roots with the military date back to the first Spanish soldiers who founded the San Antonio de Bexar Presidio in 1718. From its original home at Plaza de Armas in the city’s center to the active military bases scattered throughout the city, visitors are sure to experience our rich military history.
Visitors can explore the US Army Medical Department Museum (AMEDD Museum) at Fort Sam Houston. Also, be sure to visit Fort Sam’s historic Quadrangle, which is the second oldest military facility in the city. The Fort Sam Houston Museum is nearby, which tells the tale of the evolution of the army in San Antonio, beginning with the establishment of the post in 1845.
San Antonio has been home to a consistent military presence for nearly 300 years. And we look forward to proudly upholding that name for the next 300 years to come. Come visit and see what we mean.
