Texas was once French, Spanish, Mexican territory and remained, from 1836 to 1845, as an independent republic before being annexed to the United States . Thanks to the extraction of oil, natural gas and the excellent performance of technology companies, the state is today one of the richest in the country.

With so much money rolling in, big Texan cities have everything we like, from electronics to clothing, to household items and, why not? cowboy boots and hats. Together, Dallas , Austin, and Houston make for a convenient triangular road route that’s full of surprises, but San Antonio, in upstate Texas, is also well worth the stop.

It doesn’t take long in your center to be enchanted by the human scale of the city. The region holds the remains of Misión San Antonio de Valero, one of the five fortifications that the Spanish priests built in the region between 1718 and 1731. Renamed Alamo , the fortification is a point of pilgrimage for tourists.

Also built almost 200 years ago, the other four Catholic missions founded by the Spanish Franciscan priests are linked together by a trail, the Camiño Coahuilteca , and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Those who don’t want to know about so much effort can embark on a boat trip on the friendly boats of Rio San Antonio Cruises

Another option is to take your own leisurely walk along the River Walk , a charming waterfront boardwalk that has become San Antonio’s premier recreational area. For this reason, this is the best area of the city to stay (the luxurious Omni La Mansión is nearby) and also to eat.

In this second aspect, a local entity is Mi Tierra , with tex-mex food and flashy decor. Just across the street, El Mercado sells piñatas, sombreros, colorful skulls, and a host of other items commonly associated with Mexico.

Want more adrenaline? San Antonio has a SeaWorld unit , with extreme roller coasters and aquariums with different marine species.

A little further along, about 30 minutes from Downtown, on IK-10 West, is Six Flags Fiesta Texas , which appeals to the extreme Superman roller coasters : Krypton Coaster, two minutes and 35 seconds of mind-blowing turns and loops, and Goliath , in which passengers travel inverted at 80km/h.
