The daq has a unique following in San Antonio as bartenders hang their hat and garner bragging rights on making the best daq. More than just three ingredients – the best mixologists know how to implement rum expressions and creative fusions to elicite depth within the daq cocktail.
The DASHI Daq-Off Throwdown encompasses three categories: Speed, Judge’s Choice, and People’s Choice. Sponsored by Real McCoy, Wray and Nephew, Appleton, and Southern Glaziers, competing teams will have an array of rum styles to wow the judges and the audience. Equipped with an MC celebrity, DJ, and Food Network-style format, teams will be put to the test to throw down and create the best daq in Texas with all eye’s watching. Don’t miss this championship event that aims to invigorate the San Antonio mixology industry.
Each team will endeavor to make five (5) daqs (one per judge) as fast and with the highest quality as possible. Teams shall begin the round with hands on the bar as the MC counts down and the bell is rung. There will be a time clock visible to the team, crowd, and MC for reference throughout the round to ensure accurate time recording. Teams shall end their round with hands on the bar to signal completion. Once the team completes the Speed Round and judges are completed scoring, the Judge’s Choice Event will commence prompted by the MC.
There are two rounds to the Speed Event – Prelims and Final. The two teams deemed fastest after scoring by judges shall advance to the Final Round for the Speed Daq-Off Final – which will culminate into the final event and climax of the competition after Judge’s Choice.
If in the event two teams tie in the Speed Prelim round or the Daq-Off Final, there shall be a head-to-head tiebreaker round with each team occupying one well to make one (1) daq simultaneously. Each team will choose 1 team member to compete. The only category judged in the head-to-head tiebreaker is Time. The team who has the fastest time will either advance to the final round (Prelims) or win the overall event (Final).
Each team shall receive 2 minutes to make 5 daqs (1 daq per judge). Teams shall begin the round with hands on the bar as the MC counts down and the bell is rung. Teams shall end their round with hands on the bar to signal completion, potentially utilizing the full 2 minutes without penalty.
Judges will complete the scorecard and give verbal account of the team’s daq for all to see. The MC will have a mic and quickly interview each judge. The team will stand behind the bar and the audience will be prompted to listen as each judge gives account. The Judge’s Choice winner will be crowned at the end of the event.
Each team will bring to the DASHI venue a pre-mixed daiquiri batch of at least three (3) gallons. While each team is competing in the Speed and Judge’s Choice events, the DASHI event staff will be pouring the team’s People’s Choice batch to the ticketed audience. Each member of the audience will receive one (1) People’s Choice daq per team. Once all teams have completed the Speed and Judge’s Choice Events, the audience will submit their ballots into the team tip jar for who them believe has the best daq. The MC will prompt the audience to submit ballots while scorecards are being tabulated.
Once the events are completed, the Event Coordinator will tabulate each scorecard within 15 minutes of the last team’s completion. The Event Coordinator will announce if there are any ties and prompt a tiebreaker, if applicable. The People’s Choice will be tabulated immediately upon the last member of the audience has cast their ballot. The winners will revealed to the MC. All teams and audience will be standing by for the Event winner reveals.
Each winning team shall receive a Coup Trophy and an industry-geared and sponsored champion’s prize.
