I joined the Jack Sellers Bexar County Palomino Patrol in 2008 and have been an active member from then on. The Palomino Patrol is known for its Grand Entry, which has been a part of the opening ceremonies for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo since 1951. This Grand Entry is an absolute “must see” that you won’t find at any other rodeo. My specific role in the organization is serving as the American Flag Carrier for the National Anthem, along with my horse, Quincy.

Shopping Destination: Any boutique, Sisters Boutique is one of my favorites.

Each night during the rodeo, my brother walks Quincy and I to the arena, gently opens the gate and leads us in. We carry an EXTREMELY large American flag (6 x 12 feet, to be exact) that is on twelve-foot pole. While the National Anthem is sung, Quincy and I carry the flag around the rodeo arena at a steady pace, stopping in a spotlight as the lights come up, everyone gets fired up for a great evening and we run out. We get to do this routine twenty-one times throughout the month of February.

Serving as a member of the Palomino Patrol is truly an honor. My mother, father, brother and husband are also members, which allows me to create lasting memories with my family, including Quincy. I am a military wife and the daughter of a veteran, so carrying our country’s flag for each rodeo performance is something that is close to my heart. Carrying the flag for me, is not about the spotlight, it is a showcase of the pride that I take in being an American. While Quincy and I move the flag throughout the arena, it fills my soul to see the tears of pride and joy in the audience.

San Antonio is proud to be Military City, USA, and the pageantry that is displayed through the Grand Entry during the rodeo is just a small way we show our pride and support as a community. I am so thankful that I get to play a role in showcasing that pride.
