Romance on the San Antonio River Walk
The lush landscapes, quaint pathways, tinkling waterfalls, quiet pools, outdoor art and charming outdoor patios on the famed River Walk evoke the renowned public spaces of Europe. The River Walk winds through the center of downtown San Antonio, one block below street level, and the river is lined with dozens of shops, restaurants and clubs. It is a world unto itself, and as you descend down to it, you leave everyday life behind. Settle onto a perfect riverside patio and sip a cocktail or coffee, share an intimate dinner on a cafe balcony or enjoy a leisurely ride in a river cruiser.
The Tranquil River Walk Museum Reach
If the downtown section of the River Walk is an explosion of humanity, the beautifully landscaped Museum Reach section of the River Walk, opened in 2010, is a calm and quiet retreat. Discover the sometimes subtle, sometimes not, art under the bridges as you make your way north along the 1.3 mile route. Your journey ends at the Historic Pearl Brewery complex, cited by the New York Times as one of the best places to visit in San Antonio for a memorable meal and a bit of shopping.
Enchanting Gardens and Trails Off the River Walk
Other quiet, unique locations for alone time include the one-third mile long paved nature trail at Mission San Juan, perched on the banks of the San Antonio river as it winds south from downtown, the beautiful San Antonio Botanical Garden (great views from the Overlook tower), or the enchanting Japanese Sunken Garden in Brackenridge Park.
Adventurous Spirits
If you two share a love of two-wheeling, bicycle rentals are easy to find downtown, especially with the city’s B-cycle bike sharing kiosks. Take a spin through the King William Historic District and stop to refresh at the Crofton and Constance pocket park—tucked away in a residential corner along the San Antonio River.
For brave souls, try a private helicopter ride for two. Leave at dusk, soar over the breathtaking Texas Hill Country, and land in San Antonio just as the city lights begin to glow. For a more grounded adventure, Crownridge Canyon Natural Area, located near the Westin La Cantera Resort, is an ideal place for a leisurely hike through the romantic Texas Hill Country.
Divine Wine and Hill Country Drive
The Texas Hill Country, which begins just on the city’s northern cusp is also the state’s popular wine region and it’s perfect for a romantic day trip. There are more than 25 wineries within an hour of San Antonio and Wine Spectator notes that “select wineries do excel with varietals such as Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.”
The “unexpected gems” that Southern Living finds in the Texas Hill Country include “rivers that wind through stands of bald cypress trees, shimmering lakes cupped in limestone canyons, and rustic German towns….” Take their advice and walk the half-mile at sunset to the top of Enchanted Rock, north of Fredericksburg, for an awe-inspiring view of the countryside.
