Citing America’s Coolest River Walks, Travel + Leisure recently called San Antonio’s the “granddaddy of all River Walks.” Four million visitors a year stroll over arched stone bridges and under the shady cypress canopy along this uniquely San Antonio paseo.
Many of San Antonio’s best hotels hug the banks of the “quiet” end of the River Walk as it winds its way through the heart of the city, a block below the street level.
A modern hotel in a renovated historic building is difficult to resist. The Omni La Mansion del Rio, built as a school in 1852, allows guests to use the Mokara Spa, San Antonio’s only Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Spa. The ultra-cool Hotel Valencia Riverwalk was recognized by Travel + Leisure readers as San Antonio’s hippest hotel and one of the top 500 hotels in the world.
Some San Antonio luxury hotels right on the River Walk bear familiar names. Contemporary cool meets bold Latin flair in the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, with stunning artwork commissioned from local artists. Texas hospitality shines at the Westin Riverwalk, with rooms and suites offering downtown or River Walk views and well-appointed, oversized baths. Contemporary style and expansive balconies define the San Antonio Marriott Riverwalk Hotel, where spacious guest rooms feature soothing interiors and a hint of a Spanish accent.
Along the northern edge of San Antonio lies the Texas Hill Country, a 15,000-square mile expanse of limestone bluffs. Dotted with picturesque small towns, many settled by German immigrants in the mid-1800s, the Hill Country is home to 25 wineries and is the country’s second-largest viticultural area. The 250-acre, recently-renovated Resort At Tapatio Springs, with eight miles of hike and bike trails, a 27-hole golf course, horseback riding, three restaurants, swimming pool, jacuzzi and a long list of other amenities, is co-owned by country and western singer George Straight.
