Wine and culinary enthusiasts are discovering the Texas wine region, the nation's second fastest growing. The region begins just north of San Antonio, where wineries are tucked amid the historic towns, rustic farms and rolling hills of the Texas Hill Country.
"Our wine industry is coming of age in terms of both experience and respect," says Richard Becker, who along with his wife, Bunny, owns Becker Vineyards near Fredericksburg, about an hour from San Antonio.
Becker is an eloquent and enthusiastic booster of Texas wine. “We can make cabernet that’s as good as anyone’s in the world,” he said.
But making the best cabernet doesn’t stop Becker and others from experimenting with numerous grapes. Hill Country growers make wines from more than 20 different varietals, he said, though in small lots for sale only in tasting rooms.
The holiday season is a perfect time to visit this charming area of Texas on and off the Holiday Wine Trail. Sip and shop your way across this picturesque region of Texas, featuring breathtaking vistas of limestone hills and welcoming, attractive small towns that still retain the authenticity of their European roots.
