The Saturday morning Pearl Farmers Market opened in 2009 at the historic Pearl Brewery. It quickly grew into a magnet for food enthusiasts of all stripes, with locally grown organic fruits, vegetables and meats, freshly baked artisan breads, delicious hand-crafted cheeses and table after table of gourmet food items.
The Pearl Brewery is beautifully situated at the new north end of the San Antonio River Walk and you can take a river taxi or guided river tour right to the Pearl from downtown San Antonio. If you take a river cruiser, watch for the stunning outdoor art along the banks of this new 1.3 mile stretch of the River Walk. If you prefer to drive to the Pearl, there is ample parking.
Gather the essential ingredients for a perfect picnic — crusty bread, soft cheese, plump red tomatoes and juicy Texas peaches. Satisfy a sweet tooth with fudge, brownies or gourmet chocolate, and don’t miss the cupcake van! Then find a comfortable spot to enjoy the live music, or wander down to the River Walk and picnic on the banks.
Take a unique, locally made gift to someone back home. Choose from a fantastic assortment of specialty items like scented candles, gourmet nuts, honey and relishes. Each vendor grows or produces the products they sell within a 150-mile radius of San Antonio. See this week's list of vendors.
Watch local chefs do a lively cooking demonstration at 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and noon. Find out who will do the chef demonstrations this Saturday.
Join a free walking tour of the brewery grounds and learn not only about its history — the brewery was established in 1883 — but also about its future.
Some of the city's most innovative chefs have opened restaurants at the Pearl -- choose among Mexican street food, trattoria-style Italian, or fresh seafood. Unique shops are opening at the Pearl, from Full Goods, a kitchen speciality store, to The Twig, an independent bookstore. The Pearl shops are good places to find unusual things.
The Pearl Brewery dates to 1883 when it opened on the San Antonio River -- a source of the good water needed to make good beer. Redevelopment began in 2002 and today it is a quiet lush oasis, an urban village with a minimal carbon footprint and cutting-edge green technology. The famed Culinary Institute of America opened a school at the Pearl and plays a key role in shaping the Pearl into one of San Antonio's most important culinary centers.
