Just follow South Alamo from downtown to the Southtown/King William neighborhood, where Victorian mansions, shady streets and old warehouses have proved irresistible to the city’s artists. Shops and restaurants are low key. Plan to spend some time at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, a village of working artists. There are two art walks each month in this area if you are lucky enough to be in town.
Blue Star Contemporary Art Center
Founded by the city’s artists in 1986, Blue Star is in a rambling warren of 1920s-vintage warehouses along the San Antonio River. You’ll find galleries, studios, theaters, bars and restaurants here and it’s also home to the Joan Grona Gallery, an early champion of local artists, and the funky San Angel Folk Art. Art House Studio is just around the corner from Blue Star.

Southtown First Friday Art Walk
A gallery walk on the first weekend of each month is a good time to see all the small, provocative artist-run Blue Star spaces such as Cactus Bra, UTSA Satellite Space and StoneMetal Press. Nearby on Stieren Street, part of an artists’ colony known as the Compound, is the pioneering Sala Diaz and Unit B.
