Artpace is a foundation that promotes contemporary art, founded by Linda Pace, an art lover and patron, in 1995. The Artist in Residence program brings artists from Texas, the U.S., and around the world, some with substantial pedigrees in the art world, to live and work at Artpace for two months.

This is not so much a museum as an exhibition and education space and home of the Artpace International Artist-in-Residence program, three yearly in-house artist residencies lasting eight weeks with three resident artists in each; one artist from Texas, one from elsewhere in the United States and one from abroad. Do you follow? So, nine resident fellows, total, in a calendar year.
While in San Antonio, the artists are encouraged to take part in educational youth programs and community outreach on-site, and to explore San Antonio and Texas. This has made for some terrific exhibitions by the likes of Felix Gonzáles-Torres, Xu Bing, Bojan Sarcevic and Karen Mahaffy, and creative events like the yearly Chalk It Up! family event in October.
I strongly encourage you to make the scene; it’s free to the public, hosts a ton of potluck suppers and Taco Friday each week, and gallery talks, and the staff is deeply committed to art and this city.

Artpace features rotating shows, displaying the work of artists selected by a guest curator for 2-month residencies at the facility. One artist must be from Texas, one from anywhere else in the United States, and one from anywhere else in the world.
The result has been a fascinating melange, including everything from twists on the traditional -- such as a monumental drawing of a winter landscape populated by men in black tracksuits and a lenticular print (an image that shows depth and motion when the viewing angle changes) in which the Alamo vanishes before one's eyes -- to the more cutting edge: an installation of 5,500 pounds of airplane parts or rooftop speakers that sing until the sun sets. Lecture series by the artists as well as public forums to discuss the work have also helped make this a very stimulating art space.

Taco Friday is another reason to visit Artpace. It’s a two-for-one: art and food! Every Friday from noon until 2 p.m., El Tacomiendo taco truck pulls up to Artpace’s courtyard oasis to provide a wide variety of scrumptious fare. My personal favorite is their tostada de camaron, a shrimp chalupa, for $3.50. It doesn’t get any better than that! Be sure to visit the drink table. For $1, you may have your choice of a Mexican soft drink or bottled water. My husband and I both had Sangria Señorial, an alcohol-free sangria, that was quite tasty and hit the spot.
