In a world of around-the-clock digital tv, movies and games, unplug your children and turn them loose at a good old-fashioned playground. Here are a few of San Antonio's best, ideal for climbing, exploring and playing make-believe. Some have restaurants, outdoor patios and live music for the adults, too.
DOWNTOWN
HemisFair Park: Like a wooden castle in a fairytale forest, the amazing playscape tucked into this 15-acre downtown park engages the imagination of any child. Winding stairs and pathways, towers topped with spires, slides and swings, and nooks and crannies so small that adults can’t squeeze into them will keep youngsters busy for hours. Next door is the children’s Magik Theatre. Strolling paths lead to lush landscapes, cascading waterfalls, historical buildings and the famous 750-foot tall Tower of the Americas.

NEAR DOWNTOWN
Brackenridge Park: You can spend all day playing at Brackenridge Park, a 343-acre emerald of trees and trails snuggled along the headwaters of the San Antonio River. After wandering through the San Antonio Zoo, beautiful Japanese Tea Garden or the Witte Museum, stop by the playground cradled by a curve of the river behind the zoo. You’ll find several playscapes with slides and tubes along with swings and a see-saw. You can also feed some of the lazy ducks at the river, and ride the miniature train around the park.

The Cove: Eclectic, fun and family friendly, this restaurant at the edge of downtown has something for all ages. Bands play every night to diners indoors and, when weather’s nice, outdoors. Kids get to scramble over an outdoor playscape with slides and a climbing wall as parents listen to music and keep an eye on them. Older children can play basketball or ping pong. The menu offers fresh and healthy options such as Organic Sweet Potato Fries, the Vegan BLT (tofu bacon) and the Blue Bison Burger (grass fed).

CENTRAL
Two Bros. BBQ Market: For a down-home Texas experience, where kids play in the back yard as slow-cooked meats fill the air with spicy aromas, this pit-barbecue shack across from Walker Historic Landmark Park is perfect. Huge oak trees with long arms sweep near the ground as if welcoming people to linger over cold drinks on an outdoor patio, as children climb and slide on a playscape or get dirty in a sandbox. Run by a top chef, expect standards such as smoked beef brisket and pulled pork as well as twists like cherry-glazed ribs.

NORTH
The Shops at La Cantera: Shopping and kids don’t always mix well, but this upscale collection of shops at the foothills of the scenic Texas Hill Country is not your typical mall. When you walk into this tranquil village-like center you’ll be surrounded by lush greenery, rippling water, sweet scents of baking pastries and, ensconced in the middle, a bright four-level playscape perched on a foam floor. Trees and overhead tarps filter the sun. Hollow tiki gods – ideal to hide in – stand guard. Extra bonus: a Marble Slab Creamery sits on the corner.
