Be a part the celebration – everyone is invited to join in the fun this year with the biggest and best annual River Art Show and Festival, Saturday, October 3rd 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday, October 4, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It’s one show you won’t want to miss and it’s free. This year the event is juried to include over 100 national and regional artists displaying watercolors, acrylics, pastels, pen & inks, jewelry, fabric art, ceramics, 3D art, sculptures, photography and digital art. It all takes place on the quaint, winding streets of San Antonio’s original village, La Villita in downtown San Antonio. Visit with the artists, stroll the patios, watch artists painting on location, in the Assembly Hall and down side streets. Sip cool Margaritas, an ice cold beer or soda, purchased at Bolivar’s, bring the kids and enjoy San Antonio’s oldest annual art show. The River Art Show and Festival began in the summer of 1947 when two groups of local artists who had been meeting informally for lunch at a local restaurant decided to have an art exhibition along the banks of the San Antonio River. The success of this venture led to the formation of a new organization, the River Art Group. Over the next few years the River Art Group met in various locations. In 1956, the Group moved into the Florian House in historic La Villita. The Florian House was built in 1870 and was occupied by one of the first French families in San Antonio. The Gallery currently has over 350 member artists and is one of the largest self- supporting organizations in the country. All activities are directed and executed by the member artists including the operation of the gallery which is open daily from 10 - 6 at 418 Villita St., Suite 1400 in San Antonio, 78205. “An interesting note this year is that the original Best of Show award presented when the show first began 62 years ago, was a statue of “King River” designed by the nationally famous San Antonio sculptor, Pompeo Coppini,” explained Charlotte Cox, Co-Chair of the event with Sylvia St Jean. The model for the sculpture was discovered recently and it will again be awarded to the winning artist at an awards ceremony on Sunday, October 4th at 3:30 PM in the La Villita Assembly Hall. If you haven’t been downtown in a while, isn’t it time you rediscovered a treasure in your own backyard? For those who live outside of San Antonio, try a fun day trip or a destination mini vacation. “Member artists of the River Art Group Gallery and their guest artists wish to extend a warm welcome to you to come to their annual art event showcasing great artistic finds of quality, original, one of a kind art and ‘little treasures,’ all reasonably priced,” said Sylvia St Jean, Co-Chair of the event. Parking is available on Presa or St. Mary’s streets, within close walking distance to LaVillita. There are many good restaurants in and around the area as well. The interesting and unique shops at La Villita will also be open for your enjoyment. For more information go to www.riverartgroup.com or call 210-226-8752.
