San Antonio's City Nature & Hill Country Itinerary

The best of both worlds—the convenience of the city with the open space of the countryside. San Antonio's premier city parks and the Hill Country's challenging trails and waterways set the scene for a perfect outdoor adventure, all without straying far from the city limits.

Alamo City Outdoor Adventures

Botanical DomeALRedon.jpg Start your outdoor adventure at the headwaters of the San Antonio River, Brackenridge Park. Pack a picnic and plan to spend the day hiking and biking the trails, or visit the Sunken Gardens, a traditional Japanese tea garden. Brackenridge Park is also home to the San Antonio Zoo, should you want to stop by and see some exotic wildlife.

You can find more adventure at Natural Bridge Caverns. In addition to the traditional cavern tour, you can spelunk the undeveloped areas of the caves.

Before you head to the Hill Country, get acquainted with the diverse landscape of Texas at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens and Lucile Halsell Conservatory. These 33 acres of exquisite and intricately designed gardens replicate Texas in miniature, from Hill Country wildflowers to East Texas roses.

Hills Made for Hiking and Biking

CowboyatCorral Once you're in the Hill Country, you'll see how it got its name. The lush rolling hills are punctuated with wildflowers in the spring—perfect for hiking and biking—and its lakes and streams will invite you to take a dip.

Travel to Boerne, where you can tour a working longhorn cattle ranch, or rent canoes and kayaks for a trip down the river at Guadalupe River State Park. The outskirts of town are perfect for casting a line or hunting for whitetail, Axis buck, or quail. Then, take a restful stroll through the streets of Comfort for some antiquing—this German town's wide streets hearken the Old West.

Continue your journey north towards Fredricksburg—also a shopping destination with an abundance of boutiques and specialty shops lining its main streets. Visit Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a massive dome of granite that is the stuff of Indian lore—ghost fires, human sacrifice and spirits create an atmosphere of awe. Rock climb, rappel and hike its rugged terrain. If you like to stay up late, the area is perfect for stargazing.
