The music scene in San Antonio is thriving and it's not just the venues but the beauty and the history behind it that makes it that much more interesting.
My name is Henry Brun and I am a band leader and musician. My orchestra is called the Latin Players and we live in San Antonio. We are considered locals but we do a lot of international traveling -- as far as China or as close as La Villita. This is Judi Deleon, my partner and wife and a solo jazz vocalist.
If you are looking for live entertainment in San Antonio there are so many places. You will not find a night that you will not have good entertainment. Go to the River Walk and listen to Jim Cullum at The Landing. He is one of our stalwarts in music here in San Antonio, and to me he is an icon in jazz because he started this movement here 60 plus years ago.
To listen to music at a spot where you aren't sure what's going to happen from one day to the other, I would have to say Sam's Burger Joint. It always had that vibe to it since the beginning of the days when it was first Billy Blues. They have maintained that reputation through developing talent and you just never know who is going to come in those doors
I would have to say that my favorite place to perform is here at the St. Anthony hotel's Peacock Alley. It's laid back. One of the most beautiful hotels in San Antonio, it's a historical hotel. The people are warm and friendly.
Some of San Antonio's hidden treasures to me are on South Presa. There's a very cool and funky restaurant called Taco Haven. When you walk in there, be prepared to see who you don't expect to see. The food is great, it's unique and it's one of those places that I say is San Antonio.
Another favorite hidden treasure is AnArte off of Broadway. Ana Montoya has some beautiful pieces in the collection and there are some things in there that have just blown me away. That is one place you have to visit.
The environment, the music, the food, the culture, all put together makes San Antonio what it is. I am Henry Brun, and I am Judi Deleon. We are San Antonio. Deep. In the Heart.
