1ST ANNIVERSARY

A year after its launch, the SACVB is continuing to build on the brand "San Antonio. Deep. In the Heart." Fresh from winning some major industry kudos with two silvers in the Adrian Awards for "New Brand Image Campaign" and "New Brand Advertising Series," SACVB Executive Director Scott White says " our brand is resonating with our visitors and locals; it is grounded in authentic San Antonio and reflects our city’s history, heritage, people and passion through all our marketing efforts.” Mariachi Valentine's Day Welcome at San Antonio Airport with Yellow RosesStrategically timed with Valentine's Day, the brand message was locally reinforced this year with the county's annual group weddings at the historic Arneson River Theatre. Hundreds of couples helped usher in the brand last year; this year the love continued to flow for San Antonio. Photos from the ceremony are available at our online photo gallery. A special thank you to the San Antonio Airport Ambassadors and Visitor Information Center staff for presenting yellow roses to visitors throughout the weekend.

CORAZON RED

The uniform of the Customer Service Representatives was recently updated to reflect the Deep.In the Heart. brand.  For many years prior to the new brand, the CSRs wore navy blue jackets, pants and skirts.  The CSRs assist convention and conference planners with registration, bag stuffing, room monitoring, cashiering and destination information. Pictured in uniforms are Mary Suttles and Lillian Miller, SACVB Customer Services Representatives, working registration for the Texas Music Educators Association's 2009 Clinic/Convention.

SACVB HELPS THE ANIMAL DEFENSE LEAGUE

One kind deed leads to another. Last November, Marjorie Hayes was in town from California for the American Physical Society meeting when she befriended a stray dog at the Convention Center. Marjorie named the dog San Antonio Rose and after giving her a little TLC, turned her over to the Animal Defense League. When asked if the CVB could send her a token of appreciation, Marjorie requested we do something nice for the ADL. Our staff brought in sheets, towels, pet supplies and cash for a big, heartfelt donation to the ADL in honor of Marjorie and San Antonio Rose.

SER PADRES IN S.A.

Communications' team member Evelynn Bailey hosted Ser Padres magazine, a popular Spanish language parent magazine with a circulation of 720,000. Ser Padres, a Meredith Publication, enjoyed their time in the sun while shooting a spring fashion feature in San Antonio. While in town, they also shot video for their website to be debuted in March and conducted editorial research for a May travel and cuisine story. A one page spread would be worth approximately $56,000 in media value. Many, many thanks to our partners who did an outstanding job in making sure Ser Padres had everything they needed to get the job done and then some: Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa, Market Square, La Villita, Parks & Recreation and the wonderful staff at Rio Cruise lines.

2009 S.A.V.E. Program
The 2S.A.V.E. (San Antonio Vacation Experience) Brochure009 partner-sponsored San Antonio Vacation Experience Program (S.A.V.E.) launched February 1 on visitsanantonio.com. Participants include 43 hotels and 27 attractions and shopping destinations. This program is a key marketing initiative to drive travel to San Antonio from Texas markets. New brochures (530,000) are printed for distribution with Travel & Leisure Guides as fulfillment for San Antonio information requests, for distribution through all Texas Travel Information Centers, the San Antonio Airport, and in hotels and businesses in targeted Texas cities as well as Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

To impact spring break travel, an 8-page “Spring Has Sprung” insert appeared March 1 in the Austin-American Statesman, Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star Telegram, Dallas Morning News, Oklahoma City Oklahoman, Waco Tribune, and Corpus Christi Caller. Monthly e-mail messages to opt-in subscribers continue to keep S.A.V.E. top of mind. Also, a Search Engine Marketing Campaign has launched to drive traffic in preparation for spring break. Keywords that were the most successful during the 2008 campaign drive the ad message strategy. As the campaign progresses, ads will link to new, targeted and detailed content about SAVE partners.

History & Heritage Campaign
The CVB has been pushing out multi-pronged digital marketing focused on San Antonio’s history and heritage assets. Outreach to bloggers, travel sites, and message boards has resulted in distribution of San Antonio-related content, increased back links to visitsanantonio.com, and posting of San Antonio events on major event boards. More user friendly organization of history and heritage information on visitsanantonio.com and new content related to cultural events facilitates and optimizes consumer search for San Antonio. In addition, participation on Twitter (currently 948 San Antonio followers) creates ongoing, active conversation about San Antonio.

Trip Advisor
Digital outreach continues with new San Antonio content on Trip Advisor promoting Authentic Culture, Romance & Relaxation, Texas-Sized Thrills, From Tees to Tip-Off and City Nature & Hill Country.

Broadcast
San Antonio commercials are running on network and cable channels in Denver on a schedule that covers early morning, afternoon, and evening programming, including some prime time spots , such as The Today Show, The Tonight Show, Dancing with the Stars, The Masters. Denver was selected as a target market due to numerous direct flights to San Antonio and research indicators for this market regarding familiarity and inclination to travel to San Antonio.

Inside Golf
S.A. Golf AdThe CVB partnered with Inside Golf to produce and air four 30 minute segments highlighting San Antonio golf, which aired throughout February. Two 30 second San Antonio TV commercials also aired with each segment. Programming reaches over 17 million homes across Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Boston, Chicago, and Atlanta.

Print Advertising
Print advertising impacts San Antonio's brand image and recognition. In February, leisure ads appeared in Condé Nast Traveler, Links, Midwest Living, Travel + Leisure Golf and Saveur. Additionally, you can see San Antonio banner ads and information on the following publication websites: www.bridalguide.com, Departures Magazine's Desire and Acquire: www.departures.com, www.linksmagazine.com, www.gourmetscoop.com, www.midwestlivingtravel.com, www.spiritmag.com and www.smithsonianmag.com. ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST OF MEXICO

In February our attention was focused on one of San Antonio's many strengths, it's architecture, both historic and current developments. The CVB hosted AD (Architectural Digest) of Mexico, who took particular interest in the redevelopment of downtown San Antonio. In particular San Antonio's work to preserve it's history as reflected in it's architecture, while creating new spaces for residential living, business development and tourism. The Downtown Alliance was instrumental in providing information and developing an itinerary for the editor and photographer of AD. They had an opportunity to interview a number of San Antonio's leaders in the redevelopment of downtown San Antonio, including; Ben Brewer, Downtown Alliance, Andres Andujar, Architect, and Henry Muñoz of Kell Muñoz. Special thanks to the Grand Hyatt Hotel and residents that opened their homes to this publication.

We also hosted publications from Monterrey. Both publications, Empresas Monterrey and Casa Mexico, focused their attention on the growing number of Mexicans purchasing homes in San Antonio and wrote articles on San Antonio newest resort community, Cibolo Canyons.

THE SAN ANTONIO OPERA PRESENTS: THE MIKADO

Gilbert and Sullivan, writers of The Mikado, are the undisputed masters of comic opera and the proud parents of the modern musical. That their works are more in demand today than when they were created over a century ago is ample proof of their lasting brilliance. The hapless lovers in The Mikado are mercilessly buffeted by social restrictions, legal inconsistencies, judicial inequities, government stupidities, and that’s just the first act! It would be absolutely tragic if it weren’t so hysterically funny. Do not miss this alluring performance!

The Mikado is playing in the Lila Cockrell Theatre March 20-22. Tickets can be bought online through Ticketmaster, by phone at (210) 225-5972, or in person at the San Antonio Opera’s box office. For more information regarding the show, please visit www.saopera.com.

CONTEMPORARY ART MONTH CALENDAR CHANGE

San Antonio's Contemporary Art Month is in July for one more year. In 2010, Contemporary Art Month officially transitions to March, with more cutting edge art and much-loved annual events scheduled throughout the month, including the Dignowity Hill Pushcart Derby. Contemporary Art Month continues as it has since 1985 to promote and celebrate contemporary art, especially the diverse work of South Texas artists and including art from all over North America and the world, organizing and collaborating with local galleries, art spaces, and alternative venues, with special exhibitions and unique events. At the end of 2008, Director Robert Tatum handed the reins of Contemporary Art Month to the organization's Artist Advisory Board, with special events planned for March 2009, July 2009, and March 2010. San Antonio Contemporary Art Month is now under the umbrella of SMART, a local non-profit organization that plans the annual SMART Fair.
