local and national industry barometers.
NATIONAL
TOURISM WEEK
San Antonio has more than 100,000 reasons to celebrate National
Tourism Week 2008 - that's the number of people employed in
the hospitality industry in the San Antonio area! The industry
injects $10.5 billion into the local economy each year. From
May 10-18, the SACVB and our partners honored the people on
the frontline who help make our visitor experiences enjoyable
and memorable. Firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement officers
were also thanked with special events along with members of
the military in a new event this year - Salute to Military
sponsored by the Professional Tour Guide Association of San
Antonio. Some of the week's highlights are:
-6,850
hospitality partners participated in Hospitality Appreciation
Days at SeaWorld and Fiesta Texas combined!
-Ruth's Chris Steakhouse downtown prepared and passed out
365 steak sandwiches for Taxi Cab Appreciation Day.
- 500 San Antonio Firefighters and Paramedics received a free
boxed lunch and goodie bag from Ripley's Believe It or Not
and Louis Tussaud's Wax Works.
-75 San Antonio Police Officers and law enforcement officers
enjoyed a free lunch at the Rivercenter Mall Lagoon.
-Students
from 11 area high schools and St. Philip's College prepared
food for the Salute to Hospitality Students sponsored by the
San Antonio Area Tourism Council.
This year, instead of hosting a luncheon, the CVB partnered
with the CE Group and the Pearl Stable to host a Presentation
and Reception on May 22, 2008. Hundreds attended the event
and enjoyed food from 10 different caterers after Executive
Director Scott White gave an update on the CVB's Brand Launch.
The prestigious Robert H.H. Hugman Award was also presented
to the late Viola Barrios and the Barrios Family for the passion
they have demonstrated for San Antonio cuisine thru their
food, TV appearances, and cookbook. The
Award, named for the young architect whose vision for the
River Walk forever changed the face of San Antonio, was accepted
by Viola's children (pictured left): Teresa Barrios Ogden,
Louis Barrios, and Diana Barrios Trevino. Viola started the
family business with a small restaurant decades ago, and with
years of hard work, the family now owns two popular restaurants
which are frequented by locals and visitors alike.
We wish to acknowledge the following partners who volunteered
their services for the NTW Presentation and Reception: Absolutely
Delicious Catering, Absolutely Everything Catering, Anne Marie's
Catering, A Heart's Desire, ADR A/V Services, Botanika, Cover
That Up! Linen, Don Strange of Texas, Fresh Horizons, Gary
Jones Presents, Leave it to Us Catering, PRG Catering, Sturchio
Entertainment, Inc., The RK Group, and True Flavors.
A special "thank you" to the following partners
for offering special discounts to hospitality employees during
National Tourism Week: Ripleys Haunted Adventure, Guinness
World Records Museum and TombRider 3D Adventure Ride &
Arcade, Louis Tussauds Wax Works Museum & Ripleys
Believe it or Not!, San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio

HEB PLAZA REAL SUMMER
PROMOTION
The
San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau invites you to
join us as we partner with HEB Plaza Real Gonzalito in Monterrey
to promote San Antonio as a summer destination for "REGIO
MONTANOS". Monterrey is the third largest city in Mexico
and a strong drive market for San Antonio. As a drive market
it's important to target the consumer directly and the SACVB
is once again partnering with HEB to reach a market segment
with the ability to travel and vacation in San Antonio. The
Monterrey promotion, which runs from June 25 - 30, will include
a media luncheon, a luncheon for Human Resources executives,
an advertising campaign to include radio and print and will
culminate with an in-store promotion scheduled at the HEB
Plaza Real. The print ad will be running several times in
El Norte, the biggest newspaper in Monterrey. Currently 11
hotels and attractions are scheduled to join the San Antonio
Convention & Visitors Bureau for this promotion.
Monterrey, also known as the City of Mountains, is the modern
industrial and business center of Mexico. It's the third most
populated metropolitan area in the country and the third biggest
metropolitan city after Mexico City. The whole metropolitan
area has been ranked as having the highest GDP per capita
in Latin America in 2005.
NATIONAL GEORGRAPHIC TRAVELER
- MEXICO
The CVB hosted a site visit from National Geographic Traveler
- México, May 28 to June 1, 2008. National Geographic
- Mexico is part of "Editorial Televisa International",
the most important media group in Spanish, with representation
and distribution in Latin American and the Hispanic market
in the U.S. National Geographic - Mexico targets a more affluent
readership. The site visit is helping San Antonio reach the
desired market in Mexico to reestablish San Antonio as a fantastic
shopping destination, but to also inform the consumer of the
alternative attractions and activities that San Antonio has
to offer. This will encourage return visits and extended stay
trips. The media was thrilled to visit some of San Antonio's
great destinations as well as the Hill Country and wineries
in Fredericksburg. We like to thank the Hyatt Hill Country
Resort for hosting National Geographic - México, and
thank the Fredericksburg CVB and the Boerne CVB for partnering
with the SACVB to sell the regional destination.

For

over the past three years! This year's goal
is $100,000 and you can help by purchasing
