Event Description

A significant achievement for South Texas as Maricela Sanchez Rodriguez’s work has been awarded BEST OF SHOW at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, GA, which is currently on exhibit. The show was juried by Phillip Brookman of the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. Maricela creates multi-layered collages containing brilliant and muted colored organic shapes, symbolizing life. The work has depth and visceral quality on various painted surfaces of layers. Utilizing a combination of landscape images, branded items, news articles, and the human heart, Maricela creates artwork brimming with surreal imagery and profound symbolism. Maricela is a first generation American of Mexican birth parents. Understanding Maricela means knowing her background. Growing up speaking Spanish, Maricela was a minority within a predominantly Jewish and Italian community in the suburbs of Chicago Illinois. In turn, the arts became and expressive outlet for her to triumph.
