The economic impact of the hospitality industry, one of San Antonio’s largest and most influential sectors, has increased nearly 70% from 1998 to 2008. This according to a recent study of 2008 figures conducted by Trinity professors Richard V. Butler, Ph. D. and Mary E. Stefl, Ph. D. Estimates from 2008 hospitality industry data reflect an $11 billion economic impact. This is a promising sign for San Antonio’s over 106,000 hospitality employees. That is equivalent to one out of every eight workers in the metropolitan area.
The hospitality industry is crucial to San Antonio’s infrastructure and is noted as one of the top reasons the city has faired well during the nation's economic downturn. Approximately $153.4 million in taxes and fees were contributed to the City of San Antonio and more than $286 million to all local governments combined.
This study is encouraging as San Antonio continues to push forward with new attractions and accommodations. Aside from the city’s theme parks, museums, historic sites and cultural landscape, new additions like the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa with two TPC golf courses will offer even more to visitors.
